News Weakly - 12/14/2024

Toppled
The story is that Syrian President al-Assad is now a former Syrian president. An Islamist group took the capital of Syria. We'll see how this plays out -- they claim to want to oust Hezbollah, for instance -- but, as bad as al-Assad was, this cannot be better.

Who Needs a Constitution Anyway?
Trump is vowing to end birthright citizenship when he takes the reins. The 14th Amendment insures that anyone born in the United States is a citizen of the United States, but Trump plans to end that. Forget about that doggone constitutional amendment; we want what we want and don't care about the ramifications.

Our Culture of Death
With this latest election cycle, we've proven again that we're a culture of death by voting in a whole new set of rules expanding abortion. "Oh, no," they tell us, "that's not a culture of death." Oh, yeah? Well why are they calling Luigi Mangione "a hero"? You know, the guy charged with killing the CEO of United Healthcare? When murder over discontent is "heroic", we have absolutely arrived at a culture of death. When will it stop? That will take a miracle.

Of Course!
The news item says Democrats are divided on whether or not they'll show up for Trump's inauguration. Well, of course! I mean, some will need to be there, while others are gathering to storm the Capitol ... right? Oh, don't go getting all self-righteous. Dems are not less likely to complain about election results than the GOP.

I Say Collision, You Say Collusion
An American Airlines flight departing New York had to return after reporting a bird strike to one of their engines. Democrats are pretty sure it was in collusion with Trump.

Apparently the latest polls place UHC CEO assassin, Luigi Mangione, as the leading contender for the Democratic primary in 2028. Not everyone agrees. Barack Obama is urging, "Let's not get carried away and start assassinating everyone responsible for the healthcare crisis." Fauci, apparently, is nervous, too. In other news, Wine Enthusiast magazine has named Kamala Harris as "Person of the Year." I don't ... well ... okay.

Must be true; I read it on the Internet.

Stan, I always get a good laugh from your links to The Bee--"Fake News You Can Trust,” indeed. I also appreciate the inventive and cleverly appropriate blurb headings you regularly use in News Weakly. This time I liked “I Say Collision, You Say Collusion.” (That could have also been, “You Say Collision, I Say Collusion,” I suppose, depending on one’s political leanings :).

The 14th Amendment was concerned with slaves and their children. People in the USA who were citizens of other countries, including ambassadors and such, were not considered citizens of the USA nor were their children considered citizens. Illegals are purposely abusing the 14th to plant anchor babies here. That needs to be fixed.

I can't imagine any good outcome in Syria. It is yet one more example over the last 100 years of what happens when the West tries to impose it's will and way of life in the Middle East. We think our problems in the West that stem from our diversity of religion and race is bad? It's even worse in Syria.

Who Needs A Constitution Anyway?
I don't think this is as dramatic as that. A lot of the Right's positions in the Constitution are "What did the authors intend by this?" The 14th came after the Civil War and they were answering the question of citizenship for all the newly freed slaves. Do we really think their intention was to incentivise illegal immigrants to rush into the country to give birth so they can stay? I didn't think it is an undoing of the Amendment, but a clarifying. The current interpretation and practice is bad for those abusing it and bad for the nation.

Our Culture Of Death
Oddly, I don't think I've heard anyone on the Left comment on this. I imagine there are many that would actually embrace the moniker if they didn't think others right it sounded bad.

Of Course!
This is news? Didn't they do the same thing the first go-round? As far as I can remember, the Democrats have questioned the election everytime a Republican has won in my adult lifetime. It seems odd to me that everyone seems to have forgotten that when Trump won the first time there were nationwide riots for at least a month after. But because Republicans stormed the Capitol Building for a couple hours, and Trump threatened to not leave office, we're accused of election denial? I am honestly amazed at how tame this time has been. Before, he was just the evil orange man that said rude things, but this time he's actual Hitler and nothing?

I was expecting a Bee article in their, but you did a good job of making the joke yourself.

The Bee can be so in the nose sometimes. I, in fact, actually believe there would be many that would vote for him.

I also question whether the new Syrian government will be an improvement over the old.

I agree that Trump has done a horrible job communicating his position on birthright citizenship. I don't believe it should be eliminated, but I do think that (as has been noted earlier) we should clarify what it actually means and who qualifies for it. I can't imagine that the founders would have endorsed this current situation where it;s being abused. For all of Trump's positives, his tendency to say stupid things might be his biggest drawback.

The Bee does such a good job of mocking the absurdities that they frequently hit the bullseye.
