News Weakly - 11/23/2024

What's In A Name?
The word, "squaw," originated in the Algonquian languages. The English settlers that lived there borrowed it to reference a young, unmarried, Native American woman. Apparently, over time, the Algonquians became racists, because California (like others have done) plans to rename places that use this "racist term" for a Native American woman. It's crazy, I know, but it's not just California. It's a nation gone mad. (Like renaming teams named to honor Native American bravery and prowess.)

Cause and Effect
If Ukraine uses American weapons on Russia, Putin is warning he'll consider it aggression by the U.S. ... and act accordingly. Theoretically, NATO could end the war between Russia and Ukraine by simply saying, "No, we are not allowing Ukraine to join NATO." They won't. And Biden has green-lighted the use of American missiles on Russian soil. So if we get repercussions we don't like, don't blame it all on Putin.

Tolls have been used on roads for a long time, primarily to pay for construction -- old and new -- decrease travel time, and generate revenue for local government. New York City would like to use it ... to decrease traffic -- to penalize people for coming into the city. I mean, what could go wrong? "Hey, why is business down? Fewer people are coming in." Your government working for you.

Ukraine claims Russia fired an ICBM on the city of Dnipro. If it is true, it's the first use of ICBMs in the conflict. The West is denying it was an ICBM. Logically, firing an intercontinental weapon at your next door neighbor when you've plenty of standard missiles to do the job is just ... stupid. And Ukraine fired their American-supplied long-range missiles at Russia just two days before, so ... what did they expect? I'm saddened that Ukraine and Russia are fighting. I'm concerned that Ukraine's leadership may be ... less than trustworthy. As the story above says, Russia is promising repurcussions. I'm somewhat concerned that Zelenskyy could lie us into a greater war with Russia. So I'm so glad that we are in the hands of a living God.

A "piece of art" consisting of a banana duct-taped to a wall sold for $6.5 million at auction this week. If I actually thought a banana duct-taped to a wall was art, I could have saved $6.5 million and duct-taped my own banana to my own wall. But since that's not actually art, I'll further save myself the embarrassment of having a banana taped to my wall ... that I have to change once a week. A $6.5 million proof that we live in a crazy world.

Maybe it was the Bee's "Pick On Baptists" week. One article said the latest Baptist pin-up calendar just showed photos of casseroles. Another reported the SBC voted to allow dancing ... as long as it's the "Trump dance." Finally, for all you Monty Python's "Holy Grail" fans, Biden has authorized Ukraine to use the holy hand grenade against Russia. (Sorry, non-fans. You'll have to figure that out on your own.)

Must be true; I read it on the Internet.

What’s In a Name? I found it funny that “squaw” would be offensive. This past August, as we were driving through northeast Wyoming, we came upon Crazy Woman Creek, named for a specific unfortunate native American woman. There is also Crazy Woman Canyon, Crazy Woman Crossing, and Crazy Woman Battlefield in that area. In fact, as we drove near Sheridan, WY, a billboard told us, “You Are in Crazy Woman Territory.” (Of course, I had to purchase a Crazy Woman coffee mug and a Crazy Woman t-shirt. :) If “Crazy Native American Female” is not offensive, how can “squaw” be?

It was an ICBM--Putin notified Biden that he was going to launch it.

It's surprising to me that the tribes are involved, since from what I've heard from other renamings, the tribes have actually not been in favor. But I guess they're California tribes and have accepted the white man narrative that every usage of Native anything must be racism. It's a shame nobody is getting educated these days.

Cause And Effect
There's concern that Biden's actions in all this are to encourage more war under Trump, so that in the next election they can blame it all on the Republicans. And if it wasn't for the past actions of Democrats I'd say that was crazy, but they often seem to be willing to harm America if it means they get power.

I also heard about a New York official (I want to say governor) using girl math about tolls. She said she had been considering putting the tolls at $15, but thought that was too burdensome, so now New Yorkers get to save $6 because the toll will be $9 instead. There's some crazy thinking going on in New York.

If it is true that it was a conventional ICBM, that would be the first time I'd actually be worried that Putin would use the nukes he's been threatening. Apparently he's going for the "If I can't have it, nobody can have it" strategy. It would be insane to escalate to nuclear weapons just because the invasion isn't going as planned. Those should always be saved for existential threats. Nobody is worried that Ukraine and the West are going to be trying to take over Russia.

There's a sucker born every minute. I saw a video of someone at an art museum, and it starts by looking at the filmer's feet showing only 1 shoe. It pans up to show the shoe in the middle of the gallery with people ogling it as if it is some beautiful piece of art. Post-Modern Art has lost any sense of meaning and beauty, and seems more like a tasteless cash grab.

Gotta love those Baptist jokes. Hopefully nobody is too stodgy enough to get offended by them. I'm sure my church would have enjoyed them.

And boy, did they get that Joe Biden voice down in the Hand Grenade bit. I could totally see him saying it just like that.

I read that Putin claimed it was a hypersonic missile. Why anyone would launch a missile that leaves the atmosphere and returns to another continent in order to hit the house next door? The sources I saw called it "medium range."

"The English settlers that lived there borrowed it to reference a young, unmarried, 'Native American' woman."

You mean, an injun woman?

A long time friend of mine moved to New Mexico and joined the Sheriff's department wherein his county was a reservation. Despite reservation police, he aided them in dealing with issues which would arise with tribe members. One of the tribesman (and BTW, though he doesn't look it, my friend is 1/4 Cherokee) asked my friend why white people refer to those like him as "Native Americans". He claims they have no problem being called "indians" and did have a problem with being called "Native Americans". I forget the reason given for disliking the term, but I think it had to do with being Sioux, rather than American.

BTW, I totally oppose the idea of indian reservations in this country. I'd love to see it dissolved and the populations assimilate into being fully American (or what being fully American used to mean).

Cause and Effect

Just so you know, any expression of disagreement with whatever Zalensky chooses to do makes you a Putin lover. Ask Tucker Carlson. He'll tell you!

This conflict was on the very cusp of never happening until the interference by Biden and Boris Johnson, who wanted to posture as tough on Putin. This is what comes from voting Democrat. So to a great extent, I don't much blame Putin for the conflict. And I certainly don't believe there's a need to have Ukraine be a part of NATO, and until this happened, didn't see a need for NATO since the collapse of the USSR.

I also am so glad that we are in the hands of a living God. Only He can protect us from the consequences of blatantly bad choices. That is, if He so chooses.

This is weird. I have all manner of produce duct-taped to my walls. I don't think I'll ever come close to spending $6.4 million to replace both spoiled produce and duct tape if I maintain such on my walls until the day I die. Nonetheless, I'm blessed with the aesthetic incredibleness of produce on my walls.

I didn't see the Baptist pin-up calendar story. I spit up my Cabernet when I saw it here. Thanks for the laugh!
