News Weakly - 5/10/2025

That's Gotta Hurt
Former Vice President Mike Pence received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his actions on January 6, 2021. You know ... the actions that Trump and his followers considered treasonous ... even worthy of hanging. Agree or not, I'm sure it hurts a lot of people's feelings ... which may not be a bad thing.

Singing a Different Song
Trump was originally optimistic about the economy. He figured all these tariffs and such would make things better. He's changing his tune. He's warning us to tighten our belts for a bumpy ride ... which his policies appear to be precipitating. It's expected to be a blow to our pocketbooks, but is also a blow to his ego, I bet. "Are we great yet?"

It worked so well for Harvard that Columbia University students decided to do their own pro-Palestinian demonstration. Why? What do they hope their protests will do? Possibly remove funding from Columbia, but what else? Hopefully a further increase in anti-Semitism?

Because Life Matters
In one of the most liberal states -- Oregon -- someone actually stabbed a baby seal. Clearly, baby humans don't count, but we're really outraged when baby seals get stabbed. (Note: I'm upset about a baby seal getting stabbed and that people are diligently killing baby humans.)

The System Works
So many voices are protesting Trump as the end of the world. This week a federal judge in Rhode Island halted Trump's efforts to dismantle federal agencies ... because that's how the system is supposed to work. It's called "checks and balances." It works.

A New Pope
Nothing much to say ... except it wasn't Trump. But ... his friends say, Pope Leo XIV will continue Pope Francis's legacy ... "in his own image." Ominous, since we'd prefer a "Christian pope" to do it ... in His image.

Lots of stuff from the Bee on the new pope. One story is about the new pope spending his first day in office undoing all of the previous pope's executive orders. Like ... never mind ... you get it. Another asks the question, "Is the new pope Catholic?" Reasonable question. My favorite was the breaking news that smoke was rising from Buc-ee's, indicating fresh brisket. Now that's good news.

Must be true; I read it on the Internet.

Good for Pence. Too bad he's too "milk toast" for America now that we have refused any moral standards.

Singing A Different Song
What if, all this becoming president again is all a giant middle finger to the country for not reelecting him the first time and he's just setting up the country to burn. Okay, tinfoil hat off now.

I asked the same question. What is their purpose? It definitely doesn't seem to be to change hearts and minds. A friend of mine suggested they are just acting out all those destructive tendencies they weren't allowed to as children.

Because Life Matters
I cannot comprehend any worldview as being consistent if at the very least it puts humans at even the same level of value as animals, and yet there are so many that will want this man dead for his crime, and will help a woman kill her child happily.

The System Works
If I recall correctly, every President after Reagan has been accused by the other side of trying to destroy our political system. Every one. It seems that the losing side always assumes the worst intention of the winner, and they have no faith in the actual system of government they are so afraid to lose.

A New Pope
We're just in a wait-and-see time now. From what I've heard, he doesn't hold to any views that would be anything consistent with liberal or conservative across the board. He seems liberal in some areas and conservative in others. Which, compared to someone like me, simply makes him liberal, because even his "conservative" views aren't as conservative as mine.

The Bee strikes again.

I don’t pay much attention to happenings within the RCC, but I am of course aware when it switches out “popes.” The saddest thing to me about these “conclaves” is seeing the large number of candidates who are willing and eager to step up and take a turn at serving as the ultimate false leader (“the world’s foremost false teacher” is what Tim Challies called “pope Francis” recently). The second saddest thing is that the world celebrates the perpetuation of a false belief system that keeps its “faithful” in works-righteousness bondage and devoted to an organization and its dogma all their lives.

A ”Christian pope,” Stan? Now that’s the ultimate oxymoron in my book. Maybe when pigs fly…or hell freezes over! However, if that ever occurred, what would replace “Is the Pope Catholic?” as the most humorous rhetorical question? (I just asked a serious rhetorical question about a humorous rhetorical question! ;)

I enjoyed the NFL draft joke going around regarding the Cardinals’ announcement that “the pick is in.” And fresh brisket at Buc-ee’s is good, too!

A couple of thoughts, Lorna. First, I do believe it is possible to be a Christian and a Catholic ... just not by following Catholic doctrine. I think I've even seen some. Second, the quotes are an indication that I'm not necessarily stating there is such a thing. I'm saying they claim to be. And, thirdly, the point was that they claim to follow Christ ... and turn around to do it "in their own image." All that just for clarification.

Got it. Of course, such a person as you describe (i.e. not a true Catholic) would never rise up through the ranks of the RC clergy to become pope, so a “Christian pope” is highly unlikely, as much as we would love to see it.

I think the problem with Trump's economic moves is that he campaigned on them being easy to implement with little or no pain, when the reality that his changes have the potential to unleash greatness in the economy after some period of some degree of pain. Personally, it seems naive to think that significant economic change could be brought about without some degree of pain.

I agree that a Pope that is Christian and who'll stand up for the historic Christian faith would be preferable. Cardinal Sarah, anyone. Unfortunately not.

At least Columbia has the courage to lock the protesters into the library and use that to identify/charge them.

Craig, I realize that your mention of “a Pope that is Christian and who'll stand up for the historic Christian faith” was essentially in concurrence with Stan’s wish (hope against hope?) that a true Christian would head up the Roman Catholic Church, a supposed Christian entity. Hopefully we are all knowledgeable enough about church and world history to know why that hasn’t happened and sufficiently informed about the RCC’s tenets and policies to know why it likely never will. I for one fully comprehend why the leaders of the RCC consider a Catholic pope to be far more desirable than a Christian one, sad to say.

Craig said...

Absolutely. It's simply a hope that the RCC and the Papacy will go back to focusing on the core of the Christian faith, not on chasing leftist political approval. I don't think it's a Catholic/Christian split as much as a progressive/conservative split. I'd have hoped for (Cardinal Sarah) someone who would bring the focus of the RCC back to it's roots. The RCC will never cease to be RCC, but that doesn't mean that we can't hope for it to the the most biblically sound RCC that it can be.

Lorna said...

I agree it would be so very good to see the RCC focus on a more biblical Christian faith. Of course, if the RCC were to return to its “roots,” as you say--assuming you mean the New Testament church--then the world would witness a complete dismantling of the entire RC clerical hierarchy (from “Deacon” to “Pope”), since that system defies the early church’s teaching of the priesthood of all believers (1 Pet. 2:5-9) and one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus (1 Tim. 2:5) (to name just a few relevant teachings). I for one am fervently hoping against hope for this to happen.
