News Weakly - 4/5/2025

The Double Standard is Strong With This One
A Cornell student who engaged in "creating a hostile environment for Jewish students" and "disruptive protests" -- urging the annihilation of Israel -- is afraid of "being abducted" in the streets (by, apparently, law enforcement), so he's leaving the U.S. by choice. Well, his visa was revoked and all, so that's a factor, but he's going. Because he's dedicated to an unsafe world for the Jews in Israel just as much as he is to his own safety.

Matters of State
Finally!! Trump has really made a big impact on our national well-being. He signed an executive order targeting scalpers who resell concert tickets at a huge profit. Man! It's about time. Expect your own pocketbook to bulge with this critical issue resolved. We've all been itching to have this nightmare addressed. (Was that too much sarcasm for one entry?)

When Does It Stop?
Tariffs have their purpose, and they're not all bad, but at some point ... Trump has unveiled "global reciprocal tariffs." Never mind that the Executive Branch doesn't have the job of assigning tariffs. Never mind that the idea of putting tariffs on countries we are helping to subsidize to stay afloat is counterproductive. Never mind that we will all pay the price. (Especially since you know there will be retaliation.) It just seems ... petty at some point. He says, "We are finally putting America first." Maybe, but not the America I would hope it could be. Not the America that cares globally. It is the self-centered "American Way" today, I suppose. (Oh, and "trade war" is certainly the correct term at this point.)

Your Best Source for Fake News
From the Bee, the funniest one this week was the simple headline, "BREAKING: Economy." "The headline says it all." Other ramifications are showing up as the Dodgers declare bankruptcy after Trump places a 25% tariff on Japanese players. And, just for fun, heaven has unveiled a special VIP lounge for people who went to Wednesday night prayer meetings. (I know. Most of you will have to look that one up.)

Must be true; I read it on the Internet.

Why on earth is "student leaves voluntarily after having visa revoked" news? I'm sure there are plenty of people that have left the country when their visa expired. It's sad that it is news that he didn't get hauled out kicking and screaming, since that seems to have become the norm now.

Matters of State
It's this even something the Fed can control in any way, since scalping tickets isn't even a federal crime? Is he back to taking his ideas from watching TV episodes and didn't like an episode that had a scalper?

When Does It Stop?
When it comes to tariffs, it seems he's got the mindset of President McKinley, but we're no longer in the age of McKinley. The world is a very different place in terms of international trade. What worked back then might not work now. I do think some of our foreign aid needs to be reviewed to see if it truly is aid, or foreign. Paying for Sesame Street in Arab nations isn't aid, as far as I'm concerned.

The student leaving was news because Trump tried to deport them and the courts blocked it. On the scalping story,, it was telling that Kid Rock was there for the signing. And Trump is clearly trying to run America like a business ... like he ran his businesses. It's not a business. And we have laws. I wish he'd keep that in mind.

Good thing I didn't go into this election expecting him to do good things. So any good he does is just a bonus in my book.

While I agree that the ticket fee thing isn't a huge issue to a lot of people, the fact that Ticketmaster as a virtual monopoly on multiple aspects of the live music industry does seem like a problem worthy of addressing.

The tariff issue seems to be more complicated that it's being presented. I agree with the premise that we should take steps to bring the manufacture of things that are critical to our country back home. I appreciate the effect that the tariffs are having on Treasuries, mortgage rates, and upcoming debt refinancing. I'm a little shocked at how quickly we are seeing countries line up to negotiate themselves out of tariffs. I can also see how this might be similar to Reagan spending the Soviets out of existence with SDI. It seems clear to me that China needs the US trade as much or more than we need theirs and that China's economy is likely not as robust as they'd like us to believe. I suspect that we'll see relatively quick negotiations with the countries that really matter and that things will go back to "normal" relatively soon.

On the ticket scalping thing, I have no doubt that it's a problem that should be addressed (and should have been a long time ago). I just don't know how it rose to the level of "Executive Order."

On the one hand, I agree. On the other, it definitely needed to be addressed and this addresses it. At least it does so in the short term.

Unfortunately, congress has abdicated much of their responsibility to the executive and judiciary branches.
