News Weakly - 2/15/2025

Extortion
At the highest level of governance, Senator Andy Kim is willing to shut down our government in order to stop Trump from doing what he's doing. His plan is to stop the government from being able to function ... to give us better government. Wait ... he might have something there. At this point, anarchy is sounding better and better. Ok, no, but ... a government officer who advocates stopping government if the government doesn't do what he wants sounds a lot like extortion ... without regard to the consequences for the governed.

Anti-Science
Kansas's governor vetoed a ban on gender-affirming care for "transgender minors." Much of Europe and more than 26 states have such bans in place because ... science. Male is male and female is female and permanently changing the body of a child in opposition to science isn't fair or kind. They claim that it decreases suicidal tendencies, but, again, science doesn't know. But, hey, the Dems know what's best for those kids, so we should just submit to our kind and benevolent masters who are willing to mutilate children on a whim.

It Figures
CNN, that powerhouse for unbiased news, has hired ex-Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, to be a political commentator. You remember him. He's the one that told Chick-fil-a, "You can't come to Chicago because we're inclusive here." That guy who apparently defines "inclusive" as "excluding those we don't like." He's the political commentator I know I want to hear.

The Real American
The headline reads "Americans' credit card debt reaches new record high." The story is that American credit card debt is up in the $1.2 trillion range. That's because they're using the government's method of paying ... credit. That's because Americans are not so keen on delayed gratification and wise economics. Actually, it's because Americans, as a group, believe they should have whatever they want whenever they want it and no one should suggest otherwise. Not like those stupid boomers who tried to pay their own way.

The Vote Is In
Did they really confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services? I mean, everyone knows he's a crackpot ... specifically in the area of health. Well ... apparently not everyone. Your government disagrees.

Filed under "Is the pope Catholic?", the Bee has the story of Pope Francis declaring, "God agrees with whatever it is Democrats want to do right now." Makes sense. (And as for the question, it's really up in the air right now.) In other news, as states sue over Elon Musk and DOGE (actual story), Congress announces a new oversight committee to oversee government oversight committees. Underlying it all, Democrats are furious that Republicans are trying to control the government just because they won the election. The nerve!

Must be true; I read it on the Internet.

I wonder when the last time the failure of the budget vote to pass was not "the Republicans fault". It always seems like if a vote fails it's either because the Republicans are playing partisan politics, or the Democrats are standing up against those uncouth Republicans. Does that fool anyone anymore?

Anti-Science
We all know Science only matters when it agrees with what we want. Though that's just a human thing, we all rebel against any authority that doesn't let us do whatever it is we want to do.

He will definitely be a clear and unbiased commentator. We should all take what he has to say as doctrine. He's definitely not a link in a long chain of trying to destroy Chicago in the name of caring.

The Real American
When I was young, I thought as a young man and got myself in a couple thousand dollars of debt, and felt so crippled by it. As I matured, I learned to think as a man and now the only credit card debt I have is nothing I couldn't have paid for outright, and I feel much better for it. I cannot imagine living that way and being happy with it. But then, I'm odd.

The Vote Is In
You mean politicians say things they don't actually mean? And here I thought Obama was just being a nice guy when he was sitting next to and laughing with Hitler at Carter's funeral.

And Catholics wonder why Protestants deny the Pope. Whenever I hear them call him the "Holy Father" I feel this flash of indignation at their exaltation of a man to the level of God. But in their minds he IS the Catholic Church. Though I have heard a few Catholics begin to question the Pope, so they're on their way to our side.

If I was a Democrat, I'd say, "Andy Kim is willing to hold America hostage!"

Anti-Science

Dems are the party of science, dude. What do you know?!

CNN's in crisis, so they have the perfect guy now. He won't let it go to waste.

The Real American

While it's been said that many Americans have run up more credit card debt in order to afford necessities during Bidenflation, there not only were too many living beyond their means prior to that unfortunate era, but others who were on the cusp and one furnace repair away from going under. Can't always blame it on the economy. Sometimes it's just bad money management. Been there, done that, but that was many years ago and I learned my lesson. Eventually, after a couple of years of frugal living and knocking over a few liquor stores, that's all behind me. (Did I say that out loud?)

Two questions:

1. Don't you mean "our" government? I thought you lived in AZ.

2. Hard to tell from this, but what's your feeling about RFK Jr in this position?

Stan said...

1. Just a manner of speaking. The government of the people to whom I'm speaking.
2. RFK Jr is an enigma to me. I might have seriously considered voting for him before he dropped out.

Even though he's pro-abortion?

David said...

And they'd be proud to be holding the government hostage.

Stan said...

David, I said "considered" and you'll be hard-pressed (read "impossible") to find a candidate that believes as you and I do. Since he didn't run long, I didn't research his positions long enough to find that.

David said...

True. Even the one we did vote for that has been dubbed the "most pro-life President" of our lifetime didn't go far enough for my taste. But at least he didn't do the political Catholic thing and say, "Personally I'm against abortion, but politically I'm for choice." What a load of hooey.

That so many on the left ignore the science when it doesn't align with their narrative should be shocking, but isn't. That they are quick to praise what is done in Europe when it furthers their agenda, but quick to ignore Europe when it doesn't is also not shocking.

RFK walks the line between the crazy conspiracy guy, and someone who wants to take reasonable steps to make people healthier. It's going to be interesting to see how he does.
