You Can't Say That

Roseanne Barr stepped in it recently when she tweeted a cruelly racist joke. Not worth repeating. She took it down, apologized, said she wasn't herself -- "It was the Ambien" -- but it didn't matter. ABC almost instantly canceled her show. Networks scrambled to pull her reruns from their lineup. Her cast and crew are out of work. She is no longer someone that anyone likes. End of story.

You can't say things like that. There are just things that are out of bounds. Especially racist or sexist (where "sexist" includes anything related to sex).

One might say, "The head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God."1 It would be unacceptable. Another might suggest, "A man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. They are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."2 Definitely not allowed. If a person was to urge women to "submit to your own husbands as to the Lord,"3 it would not be tolerated. Make the case that "Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God,"4 but don't expect tolerance or inclusion for it. These are the intolerables, the things that will not be spoken. Or thought. The truly evil things; the things that come from the mouth of God (John 3:20).

You can be fairly certain that if today's culture had anything to say about it, Christianity and our God would not be renewed for another season.

Thanks, Dan, for making my point.

Interesting, Dan comes out of hiding to comment in the one place he knows it won’t be seen. It almost seems like he does that on purpose.

It's not what is said in this case, but who says it. Wanda Sykes worked for the show and is on tape as having compared Trump to an orangutan. She was actually hired with this in her history, and Roseanne makes one dumb reference of the same kind about an Obama person and is out with all her co-workers. Incredible. Roseanne should have said it about Trump and her contract would have been extended! I'm no fan of the show or of Roseanne, but the hypocrisy is without question.

As to your actual point, I couldn't agree more. The truth is too inconvenient for too many to be allowed. It must be suppressed!

To be fair, Craig, Dan comments here a lot. I mostly ignore them without reading them. He is the lone commenter banned from this blog. I think he's just trying to send me messages, like, "Just because that's what the Bible says is no reason to think you're right. We know better than you because our god is nicer." No, never said that, but you get the idea.

Yes, Marshal, on both points. The hypocrisy is staggering and the truth must be suppressed. I only quoted Scripture, but clearly that's got to go. Some have argued for legally removing it. Others just remove it by stripping it of all meaning. Either way ...

Stan, that’s my point. There are multiple conversations where Dan would be allowed to comment, in some cases where he’s just bailed on conversations in the middle, yet he chooses to comment in the one place where he can’t.

I have to admit, Stan...there is one person I would consider banning if I only knew how. I can't seem to make out what the procedure is without having to put all comments on hold to vet them first. Blogger doesn't seem to offer a more troll specific option that I've been able to find.

On the other hand, I rather enjoy just deleting this dude after he posts. Other trolls in the past simply faded away, but this dude is one persistent false priest whose superior intellect can't seem to manage a civil comment of any thought provoking value. I think he believes he'll one day wear me down. Sad, really.

Marshal, I know of no automated blocking either. I just moderate the comments.

I guess you can say “that” if you’re talking about someone related to Trump.

There are certain people/groups about whom you can say anything ... and some you can't.
