(Look ... it's not my fault Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday. It's my "News Weakly" day and I'm going to pass on a "Valentine's Day" post. Try to bear up under the disappointment.)
Not Just "Them"
Sen. Marsha Blackburn is a Republican from Tennessee. She wants Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson investigated for attending the Grammy Awards. Why? "When a Justice participates in such a highly politicized event, it raises ethical questions." Like we don't live in a highly politicized nation where everything from entertainment to legislatures are highly politicized? Like Marsha Blackburn doesn't attend "highly politicized events"? Mind you, Jackson was nominated in the Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording category, so she had a perfectly good reason to be there. Sometimes it's abundantly clear that insanity runs in the country, not just the Democrats.
We've Come a Long Way, Baby
In a definitive ruling, a judge has ordered that certain humans do not have the right to life thanks to a 2024 voter-approved constitutional amendment in Arizona. The original state constitution believed in the right to life for all humans, but we've moved on from that, fortunately. We've come a long way, baby ... well ... let's not say "baby" because they're the ones that will die more frequently, but ... hey ... that's progress, right? I am curious when we'll get advanced enough to allow women "autonomous decision making" regarding the lives of the rest of those around them. Can you say "postpartum abortion"? (In a similar story, the governor of New York has authorized euthenasia in the state. I'm not nearly as concerned about that one. I mean, I think youth should visit Asia ... and Europe and lots of places.)
Blah Blah Blah
Big news ... the Seahawks won the Super Bowl. As if it's significant in life. Like the wondrous events of the Winter Olympics. Moving on ...

Here's an odd news item. Apparently the FTC is warning Apple CEO Tim Cook that his Apple News is using "political bias" in boosting left-wing sources and suppressing right-wing sources. Really? That's a "violation"? I thought it was "business as usual." From the printed and broadcast news media to the online stuff, it seems obvious that all sources provide a political bias. Gone are the days of the Walter Cronkites of yesteryear who just ... presented the news. Go ahead ... try to find an unbiased source today. Don't be ridiculous, FTC.

As the dust up over actually enforcing immigration laws continues, two stories lit up this problem this week. In New Jersey, Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed an executive order Wednesday barring federal immigration agents from carrying out operations on state property. That is, the governor of New Jersey is banning the government from enforcing immigration on state property. Not only that, but the calls for defunding DHS are coming to fruition, too. The Senate failed to fund the Department of Homeland Security, leaving them to run out of funding this week, and it looks like a prolonged event. They required 60% to pass it. The Dems successfully blocked the funding effort. Don't expect immigration enforcement in the near future, and don't complain that Trump has failed to provide it. This is on the legislative branch.
Your Best Source for Fake News
After the success of Turning Point USA's alternative halftime show, churches are adding Kid Rock's hit, Bawitdaba, to their hymnals. (As a point of fact, something like 12 million viewers watched the alternative show. A YouGov poll said 35% of Americans preferred Bad Bunny while 28% preferred the alternative. The percentages of preference don't match the percentages of viewership.) However, since more people actually watched Bad Bunny's show performed entirely in a language most Americans don't speak, the next Super Bowl halftime show will be performed entirely in Sindarin Elvish in an effort to be inclusive of Middle-earthers. "Expanding the market" as usual. Finally, after a genuinely shocking shooting at a school in Canada, a Canadian reporterperson announced policepersons have identified the gunperson thanks to a tip from a mailperson.
Must be true; I read it on the internet.
(We now return you to your regularly scheduled Valentine's Day activities.)

It is unfortunate that our government is full of mediocrity. People that don't seem that bright and are more concerned about being famous than actually being effective. Though it was nice of the Grammys to nominate Judge Brown for the storytelling she does on the bench.
We've Come a Long Way, Baby
Honestly, I have no hope for this country anymore. I know the Pro-Life movement is still going strong, and will continue even in Arizona, but when the majority of the nation is approving of killing the youngest and oldest of us, it's not going to be long until no lives matter. In Canada, under euthanasia laws, it's not limited to the elderly or those in constant pain with no hope of recovery, now, as a teenager, they can be "euthanized" for "long-term" depression. That won't take long once it gets legalized more widely here. Once you remove God from the equation, anything is permissible.
Blah, Blah, Blah
It is insane how important that game is to some people. And the U.S. Olympians make me even less interested in watching because they aren't even proud of the country they're representing. They're more interested in the glamor of being an Olympian than they are of being Americans.

I didn't even know the FTC had that kind of authority. What does Apple's bias have to do with trade? Maybe, a very distant maybe, the FCC could have something to say, but that would only be a slightly less overreach. Another case of mediocrity in government.

I'm not even sure what they really want. I know of no politician that actually wants open borders, and sure, the job of DHS could be split back up and make us just as discoordinated as we were pre-9/11. But what is it they actually want? Do they really want felon illegal immigrants to stay here to continue to do more crime? Do they really think Minneapolis is the only place ICE is working right now? Unfortunately, we only every get to hear their political talking points and not what they actually want and believe. I wonder if there has ever been a time when politicians were respected individuals that were consistent and honest, but today it seems to be part of the job description to be inconsistent and dishonest.

Now, if you had dismissed last year’s Super Bowl as insignificant--when our beloved Birds won so gloriously--I would have been peeved. (This year, on concession, we rooted for the Seahawks, since our daughter currently lives in Seattle.) I wonder if you’re sour on the Super Bowl because the Cardinals are such a pathetic team. :-D (Joking aside, you are right, of course--it is not significant.)
Regarding NFL’s half-time show: From what I heard, it’s probably a good thing that most observers could not understand the lyrics. Personally, I would not watch a second of that so-called entertainment--and that goes for both half-time shows!
I must say that reading through the News Weakly entries today (actually most weeks) really confirms for me why I pay as little attention to the political goings-on in this country as I do. It’s like watching one train wreck after another … over and over and over again. It truly makes it hard to believe that I live in the “greatest nation in the world.” In my view, you could head up all those stories “Blah Blah Blah”!
I believe that the viewership numbers for the Bad Bunny halftime show are misleading. They essentially measure whether or not the TV is on, not whether people are actively watching it. I suspect that a fair amount of people left the halftime show on, but weren't actually paying attention. While the alternative actually required a bit of effort.
FWIW, I think that the alternative was a good proof of concept and drew enough viewers to make the NFL think about future halftime shows. I think that the TPUSA folks will likely work to make next year's alternative much better. In general I think that competition is a good thing and that having alternatives is good.
It'll be interesting to see if the FCC follows through on violations based on Bad Bunny's vile (although cleaned up) song lyrics. Seems like obscenity in Spanish is still obscene.
There is clearly a movement that is pushing towards legalizing infanticide. Peter Singer is one of the "intellectual" drivers of the movement, but just like normalizing pedophilia, infanticide is likely going to be accepted at some point.

I don't follow Blackburn closely (I'd get arrested), but this seems somewhat out of character. I agree it was a waste of time. I didn't know Her Honor was a potential Grammy winner, which would indeed make her presence there permissable with regard to judicial ethics.
Good gosh, I hope she didn't win!

This is why voting always matters...especially on the local level.
Heh, heh..."youth in Asia". Heh, heh! Good one.

Yeah...it's absolutely meaningless and devoid of all value. But if it was the Chicago Bears, NOW we're talkin'!! Da Bearss! Da Bearss! Da Bearss!

I just heard about this a few hours ago. The difference between lefty sources and "indie" sources was vast. But the conservative sources? A big fat ZERO according to the Media Research Center. The problem is its another favored source of all the fools who say foolish things which are't true about the current administration.
And no, Uncle Walter was a lefty. His reports regarding the Tet Offensive were exploited by the North Vietnamese as it gave them confidence that if they could last long enough, American sentiment would turn against American involvement, as was the case. In that battle, Cronkite's reporting focused almost exclusively on American casualties, which were less than a third of the NV and Viet Cong numbers. In short, we kicked rump in that battle and most people thought we were getting ours kicked because of how it was reported. The leftist slant of the media in those days wasn't realized, because it was all there was.

I think this is a really easy problem to resolve. ICE finds all the illegals they can find. They heard them toward the most ideal state property they can determine...say...the governor's mansion. Once the illegals take refuge on that property, ICE officers surround it on public streets, monitoring who comes and goes in shifts so that ICE presence is constant. They nab those trying to sneak away through the cordon and those inside...like the governor and her family and staff...must endure the lack of space and the feeding of the illegals.
Just as seriously, I wonder if this action constitutes a legitimate obstruction of justice federal agents can ignore to get their job done.
I wondered about my own viewing of the SB. My desire for sports extends only to my Chicago teams, for whom I am now an out-of-market fan down here in the better state of S Carolina. I use and IPTV service (about $100 per year, and possibly stealing) to view whatever I want to watch...including programming from Azerbaijan, if I want to. I can now see (with too many tech glitches) all Bears, Bulls (BWahahaha), Cubs (could be special this year), White Sox (BWAHAHAHAHA) and Black Hawk games, except for those times when Prime or Peacock has exclusive rights, which makes me angry.
Anyway, I don't know if viewing the Big Game through a streaming service is tracked the same way it is on the standard networks. So I left the 1/2 time show on whilst I took care of personal biz, but came back when I saw someone with a mic who wasn't Bad Bunny (Bugs would kick his butt). I turned on the sound to confirm it was Spanish presentation and that was it for me.
I think many do something similar...they let it run while they do other things which allows them to watch the rest of the game without interruption. So to the numbers reflecting those who switched to TPUSA there's an unaccounted for population who simply weren't watching the halftime show despite not turning it off or switching channels.
Here's another aspect not much mentioned: Those at the game couldn't see a thing. The stage presentation was focused on TV viewers, and it blocked the view of those in the stands. Imagine that.
