News Weakly - 6/7/2025

Captain Obvious
Carried to its logical conclusion, a pro-Palestinian man attacked a demonstration in support of Israel in Boulder Colorado. He used a homemade flame thrower and incendiary devices. If "From the river to the sea" is the aim, any means is acceptable. If pro-Palestinian protests produce this kind of response, is it different than shouting fire in a crowded theater?

Mass Attack
Twelve men were stabbed in a men's shelter in Salem, Oregon. No guns were used. Strange ... I thought guns were the problem.

Reversal on Reverse
The Supreme Court revived a woman's claim that she was discriminated against at work ... because she was straight. Since we redefined "racism" in terms of power and "sexism" in terms of power, we've been running down this insane idea that only people in power can discriminate. The Supreme Court unanimously ruled it's not so, and that reverse discrimination does happen. We'll see how that goes.

Coming Out
The military has turned a corner and will begin banning (and discharging) transgender personnel. June 6 was the deadline to self-identify and get out. I'm baffled by this idea that anyone and everyone should have the right to serve in the military ... as if serving in the military is a basic human right. But, in today's "Me First" mentality, it make sense that "what I want" must be "what I get."

Your Best Source for Fake News
A federal judge blocked Trump from deporting the family of a Boulder terrorist (actual story), or, as the Bee reported the judge blocked deportation and required the Jews to be lit on fire. Nintendo released the new Switch 2 (actual story), so we have the report of a new virus escaping a lab in Japan causing millions of Americans to call in sick. Finally, on the Trump/Musk feud, a judge has decided Trump gets the nation on weekdays and Musk gets every other weekend and holidays.

Must be true; I heard it on the Internet.

It really takes a lack of common sense to not foresee that people that support Hamas would resort to violence. But the Left has the same idea Bush had after 9/11, that the Muslims would want peace, just like we do, is they were just validated and fed. They don't realize that it is an ideology of violence that drives these people.

    Mass Attack
Well, they have made some types of knives illegal, but only because they're the "scary" kind.

    Reversal On Reverse
This truly is amazing news. The idea that heterosexual white people CAN be discriminated against has been denied for so long.

    Coming Out
There are so many mental and physical maladies that the military will reject because they interfere with the combat readiness of troops. Even if it were for a true medical necessity, a soldier that requires daily hormones, of any kind, should not be in the military, because they are a potential hazard to the unit if they miss their medication. Not to mention the level of mental damage that is required to separate yourself from reality.

    1. I posted a video of some British celebrity seriously advocating that they remove the sharp tips from kitchen knives to prevent those knives from being used in crimes.

In what world would it make sense for someone to enter the military knowing that they were going to undergo years of "medical treatment" that would prevent them from actually performing their jobs, and assume that the military would simply pay for it. It is the height of self centeredness.

  2. Kudos to The Bee for offering the funniest Trump-Musk quip I have seen so far (and to you, Stan, for selecting it for inclusion :).

  3. I have no doubt “that reverse discrimination does happen,” as I experienced a small taste of it myself. At the end of my employment at Princeton University back in the 1980s, I found myself (a white person) in a “hostile work environment” created by my supervisor (a black woman). (It was an unfixable situation for me and essentially ended my career.) Surely, if I could be responsible for such evils as the Jim Crow laws (as she charged me), then I suppose that any and every straight person should take the blame for all the tribulations that gays encounter.

    1. I worked for a national affordable housing non profit and was one of a flurry of "old white men" that got fired from our positions. Strangely enough, we were all replaced by women of color in their '20s. Coincidence?

To be fair, it was probably more age/salary discrimination than anything.

  4. When I left the Army in 1975 I wanted to apply to be a police office in Columbus, OH. I was told they could only hire blacks until the percentage of blacks on the police force equaled the percentage of blacks in the city. THAT is discrimination.

Then in 1986, as an air traffic controller, I applied to be a supervisor. There was a black man and a white woman competing against me. The black guy's record/qualifications were well below mine and the woman's so he wasn't a factor. My record (commendations and other awards) and experience were well above the woman's but she had to be selected because she was a woman. At the last minute she accepted a position at another facility so I was selected. If she had not taken that other facility (long drive!!) she would have had to be selected over me.
Three years earlier she and I were selected to work a temporary control tower for an air show which was mostly WWII aircraft. We were to take turns with one actually working the aircraft while the other was to keep the strip board up today. Coin flip let me work the traffic first and I had a ball because I knew every type out there. An hour later she took over (we only worked a few hours prior to the show for all the arrivals) but fell behind quickly and didn't know one plane from another, nor could she figure out what speeds they were flying; after about 20 minutes she handed me the mic and told me to do it because I knew the planes.
The facility I at which I worked was much, much busier than the one she worked and she would have had a difficult time keeping up with the traffic and yet because she was a woman she had to be selected. I had more years, more experience, more awards, etc but merit didn't matter. But since she went elsewhere I got to stay and the controllers were glad to have me instead of her!

    1. Glenn, Your experience is an apt illustration of how well “Affirmative Action” and “Equal Employment Opportunity” measures can help fulfill the Peter Principle: “Employees rise to the level of their incompetence.”

There was a touch of irony in my personal case, as I worked in the Dean of the Faculty’s Office, where one of our tasks was to monitor the University’s compliance in meeting its “Equal Employment Opportunity” quotas among its prestigious faculty and professional staffs. My supervisor--female, black, PhD-holding Assistant Dean, and part-time faculty member--ticked all the boxes for EEO, so was able to get away with subtle bullying of her subordinates (I was not the first, and I am sure I was not the last). While I ended up resigning, she used her clout to move on to eventually become President of Brown University.
