One thing I have asked from YHWH, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of YHWH all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of YHWH And to meditate in His temple. (Psa 27:4)What was David's "one thing"? To dwell in the house of the Lord. Imagine that kind of focus, that kind of dedication, that kind of commitment to ... remaining in the continuous presence of God. If that was our "one thing," it would be life-changing. Priorities would change, directions altered, purposes adjusted. Nothing would be untouched. Nothing would remain the same.
So simple, yet so outside of our reach. We want so much more ... or, more accurately, so much other. If we made David's "one thing" our own, what a difference it would make. But ... will we?
The difficulty is that when we take our eyes off that one thing, we figure we've failed and can't go back. But that is what repentance is for. Realize I've fallen short, apologize, and start striving for that one thing again.
ReplyDeleteAs a Christian, I rejoice that I do indeed “dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,” since my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and I am a member of the imperishable Body of Christ. Nothing I do (or don’t do) will affect my standing in Christ or my permanent resident status in the Kingdom of God. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection have obtained for me what David yearned to have--permanent, discernible, and life-changing fellowship with the Lord. As a New Testament believer, I am living David’s dream, and like Paul, the “one thing” I desire is “that I may gain Christ and be found in Him … that I may know Him …” (Phil. 3:8-10).
