Every year, as we “spring forward” and “fall back,” we participate in a ritual older than most of our modern conveniences. Daylight Saving Time was born in an era when candles lit the evening hours and coal powered the world’s engines. It promised thrift, efficiency, and a clever stewardship of daylight. But as our society has changed, so too has the evidence about what this practice actually does to us—and to our economy.
Recent research paints a clearer picture. And like many things in life, the truth is more complex than the slogans that surround it.
DST has long been defended as a way to save energy and boost economic activity. Yet modern studies show that the energy savings once imagined simply do not materialize. In fact, the opposite often occurs. A major natural experiment in Indiana found that DST increased residential electricity consumption, costing households about $9 million per year, with additional pollution costs between $1.7 and $5.5 million annually. The reason is simple: while people may use less lighting, they use more air conditioning and heating. Our modern systems respond more to temperature than to daylight.
DST does, however, nudge people toward more evening activity. As one economist notes, extended daylight encourages people to “go out more often,” usually in cars—boosting consumer spending but also increasing carbon emissions. In other words, DST may stimulate certain kinds of economic behavior, but it does so at a cost.
The most sobering findings come from the spring transition. Losing an hour of sleep may seem trivial, but the data tell a different story.
Studies show that the shift to DST disrupts sleep and internal rhythms enough to cause measurable harm. Heart attacks rise after the spring change, and worker productivity declines—not for a day or two, but for up to two weeks.
A detailed analysis of global GitHub activity found that early morning work suffers significantly during this period, with workers struggling to regain their footing.
These disruptions ripple outward: reduced productivity, increased errors, and higher accident rates all carry economic consequences. When multiplied across millions of workers, the cost is substantial.
Permanent standard time avoids these transition related losses entirely. It aligns more closely with solar time, supports healthier sleep patterns, and eliminates the costly spring shock to the body and the economy. It does not offer the bright winter evenings that many people enjoy, nor the bump in evening consumer activity. But it does offer stability—biological, social, and economic.
All of this raises a deeper question: “What does it mean to steward our time well?” Scripture reminds us that time itself is a gift—“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psa 90:12). Wisdom does not rush. It does not force the body to obey the clock when the body is telling the truth about its limits.
The economic evidence suggests that our twice yearly clock changing experiment may not be serving us as well as we once hoped. The gains are modest; the losses are real. And perhaps that is a reminder that human flourishing is not achieved by squeezing more activity into the evening or by manipulating the hours of light, but by living in harmony with the rhythms God has woven into creation. Morning follows night. Work follows rest. Light follows darkness—not because we legislate it, but because God orders it. Maybe the most faithful posture is not to bend time to our will, but to receive it as it comes.
Unfortunately, as a society we've banished God and believe we are the masters of our reality. Without God, we believe we have the power and authority to manipulate the natural order to our will. We will overpower the climate, our evil, and even our mortality by our own power, or so we believe. But God looks at all our power and dreams and laughs. We take so much effort to change one thing, where He can change everything with a word. It would do us well to remember who really is in charge and how truly weak we really are.
ReplyDeleteIt nothing but psychological nonsense. There is no more daylight, nothing saved. Real time has the sun overhead at noon. How did society survive before the clock was messed with? Need more daylight? Get up earlier! Don't like kids coming home from school in the dark? Start school earlier. Etc, etc, etc.
ReplyDeleteThese are timely thoughts and shed a bit of light on a topic in which I was mostly in the dark. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist once more before I go.) I actually know nothing about the reasons behind the “spring forward” / “fall back” practice or the important ramifications of each schedule (and being a homebody and one who can make her own schedule, it doesn’t really affect me personally). I am mindful that there are so many people who work shifts other than regular, “normal” daytime hours, who make substantial lifestyle adjustments, so personally I don’t think a one-hour shift either way is that serious overall. I understand DST was briefly made permanent in 1974, but that proved unpopular and was repealed. (I don’t even remember that personally; I was in my senior year of high school, which was on split sessions, and already getting up super-early for the 7:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. first shift.) Hopefully they’ll consider that failed experiment from 1974 again now and really think and study this through carefully (or is that a waste of time?). Time will tell how it all settles down. ;)
ReplyDeleteI find the "sun overhead at noon" argument a little off because if we truly wanted to maintain that then all clocks would need to shift together to maintain that. Using the sun for a "noon gauge" is fine when you aren't using mechanical or digital means for telling time, and it wouldn't even work unless we divided the world up into timezone by minute because the current ones wouldn't work, the eastern edge of a modern timezone is still heliotropically (I think I just made that word up) different than the western edge. And what about areas where the sun never gets directly overhead due to latitude?
ReplyDeleteDavid, my point about sun overhead was about the general location in the middle of the day, not necessarily exact. Just making a point about the stupid changing to "save" daylight. Time zones, by the way, are essentially "shifting" the time so the sun is overhead at noon.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I hear someone talking about noon meaning the sun is directly overhead, my mind goes to rural life prior to industrialization where everything was dependant on getting at much work done in daylight hours.
DeleteDavid, it has nothing to do with that. It has everything to do with common sense. Farmers would get up earlier, etc. People adjusted to daylight changes without the need to change clocks.
